WORCESTER—The city is urging residents to participate in a community development survey to provide feedback that will help guide the use of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
These funds, allocated annually by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), are dedicated to programs and projects benefiting low- and moderate-income individuals and neighborhoods.
Officials say that public input is critical as the city develops its next five-year consolidated plan (2025-2030), which will outline how future CDBG and other HUD entitlement funds will be used to address community needs. Worcester received $4,261,392 in CDBG funds this year, supporting municipal departments, public agencies, and non-profit organizations in executing community development projects.
In its press release, the city emphasized the importance of public participation, stating that feedback will help identify funding priorities for projects. Eligible initiatives include renovating public facilities like roads and sidewalks in low-income neighborhoods, improving affordable housing, supporting basic needs through food pantries, youth and health programs, and other services targeting disadvantaged populations.
Every five years, the municipality submits its consolidated plan to HUD, making this an important opportunity for residents to have a say in how these funds are allocated.
The survey will remain open until Dec. 20, 2024, and is accessible on the city’s website.
