WORCESTER—Junior and senior students from multiple Worcester public high schools took on the role of ballot supervisors during Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in an effort to promote civic engagement among youth according to an announcement from the Worcester Public Schools.
Each school’s history department played a key role in identifying, encouraging, and recruiting students to volunteer in this capacity, reinforcing the value of community involvement and democratic responsibility.
To prepare for their responsibilities, students completed training through the City Clerk’s Office, where they were taught the essentials of poll work. From verifying voter registration to helping with ballot processing, students learned firsthand how to contribute to a smooth and secure voting experience.
For many of these young volunteers, the opportunity went beyond learning logistics; it offered a front-row seat to the election process and underscored the significance of fair, organized elections.
“It’s important for young people to understand the role of poll workers as they can become a gateway into things like civic engagement, community service, and combating misinformation,” said Thomas Sutton, a senior at Burncoat High School and a student volunteer on Election Day, in a press release.
The initiative aimed to empower these students to carry their experience forward, fostering a lifelong commitment to civic participation and a deeper understanding of their role within their communities.
Through their work at the polls, the students witnessed how everyday citizens contribute to the democratic process and gained insight into the important function poll workers serve in protecting electoral integrity.
