WORCESTER—With summer around the corner, the city’s is gearing up to get residents moving — for free — in parks across the city.

The Department of Health and Human Services will host a kickoff celebration for its Fitness in the Parks summer series on Friday, May 30 at 3 p.m. at the City Hall back plaza, featuring a live demonstration and remarks from city officials and partners.

The 12-week series — a collaboration between HHS and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, along with the YMCA and YWCA of Central Massachusetts — officially begins on June 9 and runs through Aug. 30, with free classes offered Monday through Saturday at eight different locations citywide.

According to the city’s announcement, the lineup of classes includes Zumba, yoga, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and sports skills training, with an emphasis on family-friendly options for all ages and fitness levels.

Mayor Joseph Petty, City Manager Eric Batista, HHS Commissioner Dr. Matilde Castiel, and representatives from Blue Cross Blue Shield, the YMCA, and YWCA are all expected to speak at Friday’s event.

The series aims to promote healthy eating, active living, and community building — and it brings energy and movement to public spaces during the warmer months.

More details, including class times and locations, are expected to be released during the kickoff or available through the city’s website.
