Worker dies in Sterling quarry accident after rock ledge collapse

Emergency crews responded on Thursday morning to a quarry in Sterling, where a portion of rock collapsed, trapping a worker inside

STERLING—Just before 8 a.m. on Thursday, emergency crews were dispatched to a quarry at 17 Stone Crest Way in Sterling after a portion of a rock ledge collapsed onto an excavator with a worker inside, the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Using camera equipment to assess the scene, responders determined that there were no signs of life, and the worker was pronounced deceased at 8:39 a.m. Recovery efforts are ongoing, with the U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration currently inspecting the site to ensure it is safe to proceed.

The name of the deceased has not been released.

The response involved multiple agencies, including the Sterling and Clinton Fire Departments, the Sterling Police Department, the Leominster Fire Department, the District 8 Technical Rescue Team (with members from Barre, Clinton, Leominster, Fitchburg, Gardner, Holden, Sterling, and West Boylston), the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Occupational Licensure, the Massachusetts State Police Drone Unit, the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services, and the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
