WORCESTER—The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced that the Worcester Public Library (WPL) has been named one of 30 finalists for the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. WPL stands out as one of just four institutions in New England to achieve this finalist status.

The National Medal represents the highest recognition bestowed upon museums and libraries, acknowledging their substantial contributions to their communities. For three decades, this esteemed award has celebrated institutions that excel in serving their communities with excellence.

“We are immensely proud to be recognized as a finalist for the prestigious National Medal for Museum and Library Service,” said Jason Homer, executive director of the Worcester Public Library, in a statement. “This honor underscores our unwavering commitment to serving the Worcester community with excellence and innovation. Being among the select few in New England to receive this acknowledgment this year is a testament to the dedication of our staff and the impact of our programs on the lives of our patrons. We are grateful to the Institute of Museum and Library Services for this recognition and look forward to continuing our mission of enriching lives through education and access to knowledge.”

To celebrate this honor, IMLS is encouraging Worcester Public Library’s community members to share stories, memories, pictures, and videos on social media using the hashtags #ShareYourStory and #IMLSmedals, and engage with IMLS on X (formerly known as Twitter), Facebook and Instagram.

National Medal winners will be announced in late May and representatives from winning institutions will be honored for their contributions during an in-person National Medals Ceremony in Washington, DC this summer.

And a friendly re-meownder that through the end of the Month, it’s still March Meowness at the library. That means all library fees are forgiven if you show a pic of your cat, or anyone’s cat, at the desk.
