WPS Hall of Fame names 2026 class

Athletes, coaches, a championship team and longtime sports reporter Jennifer Toland to be honored in May

WORCESTER—From multi-sport standouts and championship coaches to a team that helped define an era of Worcester basketball, the Worcester Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 spans generations of achievements—and this year includes a journalist whose byline has chronicled many of those moments.

The Hall of Fame Committee announced that 13 individual athletes and coaches, the Burncoat High School 1989–1990 boys basketball team, and Worcester Telegram & Gazette sports reporter Jennifer Toland will be inducted during a ceremony May 8 at the Hogan Center at the College of the Holy Cross.

Together, the group represents South High School, Burncoat High School, Doherty Memorial High School and Worcester Vocational Technical High School, reflecting what Committee Chair Tom Murray described in the announcement as the breadth of athletic excellence across the city’s public schools.

“This class embodies the heart and soul of Worcester athletics,” Murray said in the announcement. “From multi-sport stars and legendary coaches to a team that defined an era, these honorees have left an indelible mark on our schools and our city. We are also thrilled to honor Jennifer Toland, whose decades of reporting have ensured these stories are told with the respect and passion they deserve.”

The individual inductees are Tammy (Murphy) Bailey of South High School, recognized for cross country and track; Wade Bovaird of Burncoat High School, football and baseball; Jahkari Carpenter of Doherty Memorial High School, football; Judy Cusick of Doherty Memorial, basketball, softball, soccer and field hockey; Eddy Frazier of Burncoat, football and track; Tishaun Jenkins of Worcester Vocational Technical High School, basketball; Robert Kelly of South High School, baseball, basketball and football; Elaine McKay of Burncoat, coach of girls tennis, field hockey and basketball; Sean Mulcahy of Doherty Memorial, football coach; Leigh Trzcinski of South High School, softball, basketball and cross country; Leo Varetas of Doherty Memorial, soccer; Todd Walles of Doherty Memorial, baseball, football and basketball; and Trafficia Warburton of Burncoat, basketball.

The Burncoat High School 1989–1990 boys basketball team will be inducted as a championship-winning squad, and Toland will be recognized as the Outstanding Contributor for her work covering high school sports in Worcester for decades.

The induction ceremony begins with a cocktail reception at 5 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 6 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person or $900 for a table of 10. Information on tickets and sponsorships is available through the Worcester Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame.

Established to honor accomplished athletes, coaches and contributors from Worcester’s public schools, the Hall of Fame seeks to preserve the legacy of those who achieved distinction on and off the field.
