WORCESTER—Carolyn Jackson, CEO of Saint Vincent Hospital and the Massachusetts market for Tenet Healthcare, will step down from her role on Feb. 14 after nearly six years with the organization.

In a letter to medical staff leaders, Maggie Gill, Eastern Group president for Tenet, announced Jackson’s departure, stating that the decision came after “careful consideration” and that Jackson plans to focus on the next chapter of her career.

“During Carolyn’s tenure, she was instrumental in guiding our organization through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic while ensuring continued access to high-quality care for the community,” Gill wrote in the letter.

Gill also noted Jackson’s role in overseeing electronic health record upgrades and clinical technology enhancements, which contributed to Saint Vincent earning national recognitions, including Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention Award in 2024 and U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospital” designation for 2024-2025.

Jackson’s time at Saint Vincent also saw a prolonged and contentious battle with the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA), which led to a historic 301-day nurses’ strike in 2021, one of the longest in U.S. history.

Jackson’s departure comes as Saint Vincent Hospital and Tenet continue to navigate challenges in staffing, patient care and hospital operations. Tenet has not yet announced who will take over the role, but Gill stated that the company is working on a transition plan and will provide further updates in the coming weeks.
