‘Friendly find’ dog: Worcester Police Department welcomes K9 Mac

The department’s newest recruit specializes in finding those in need of help

Mac's main "thing" isn't to find suspects. Rather

WORCESTER—The Worcester Police Department has introduced its newest recruit, K9 Mac, an 18-month-old black Labrador retriever who reportedly has a friendly demeanor and a mission to save lives. Unlike other K9s on the force trained to locate suspects, Mac is a “friendly find” dog dedicated to helping those in distress.

“The department’s other dogs are used to find and locate suspects. This dog will be used to find people in need of help,” said his handler, K9 Officer Dan Pennellatore, in the department’s announcement.

Mac and Officer Pennellatore recently completed a rigorous 14-week patrol school, where Mac earned certifications in tracking, area searches, and evidence searches. His primary role will be locating missing children, individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s, and people experiencing mental health crises.

“These cases are time-sensitive, so it’s good to have the dog and not wait for the resources to come from outside of the city,” Pennellatore added.

The WPD’s efforts to acquire Mac have been more than year in the making. In addition to his current skills, K9 Mac soon undergoes training in explosive detection and ballistic evidence detection, further enhancing his capabilities.

With Mac on the team, Worcester police say they are even better equipped to respond swiftly to urgent situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
