Community Legal Aid marks 75 years of fighting for equal access to justice

Founded by Worcester attorneys in 1951, the nonprofit now serves thousands of low-income and elderly residents across Central and Western Massachusetts. A Nov. 12 celebration will honor local supporters

Seventy-five years ago, a group of Worcester attorneys set out to address a fundamental problem in the justice system: What happens when someone needs a lawyer but cannot afford one?

Their answer was the Legal Aid Society of Worcester, established in 1951 to provide legal assistance to people without the financial means to hire an attorney.

Three-quarters of a century later, that mission continues through Community Legal Aid, a nonprofit organization that now serves low-income and elderly residents across five counties in Central and Western Massachusetts.

The organization celebrates its 75th anniversary Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Jean McDonough Arts Center in downtown Worcester, recognizing its history and honoring individuals and organizations that have helped expand access to legal representation.

The anniversary comes as the need for civil legal assistance remains substantial, particularly for residents facing eviction, domestic violence and other legal problems that can threaten their housing, safety or financial stability.

Unlike criminal defendants who qualify for court-appointed counsel, people involved in most civil legal disputes have no automatic right to a free attorney. That can leave those with limited financial resources navigating complicated legal proceedings on their own, sometimes with their homes or family security at stake.

Community Legal Aid works to close that gap.

According to the organization’s anniversary announcement, its staff handled approximately 9,400 cases last year, affecting more than 23,000 low-income and elderly residents throughout the region.

The organization’s origins trace to the Worcester County Bar Association, whose members established the Legal Aid Society of Worcester in 1951 with a stated purpose: “to provide legal assistance for those financially unable to engage an attorney.” What began as a local initiative grew into a regional organization providing civil legal assistance to residents across Central and Western Massachusetts.

The anniversary celebration also recognizes three Worcester-area honorees for their contributions to the organization’s work.

Attorney J. Robert Seder of Seder & Chandler will receive the Legacy of Justice Award, while the United Way of Central Massachusetts will be presented with the Foundation of Justice Award.

The Hanover Insurance Group Inc. will receive the Pro Bono Champions of Justice Award, recognizing its support for legal services provided to people who otherwise might not be able to afford representation.

The event will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Jean McDonough Arts Center, 20 Franklin St., Worcester.

The celebration is open to anyone interested in learning more about Community Legal Aid, although space is limited and advance registration is required.

Residents can register at communitylegal.org/celebrate-75.

Those seeking civil legal assistance can also find information about eligibility and apply for help through Community Legal Aid’s website.

For an organization born from the efforts of Worcester attorneys in 1951, the anniversary represents both a milestone and a reminder that the ability to obtain legal representation often depends on something as basic as the ability to pay for it.
