Guardian joins Local News Day to celebrate community journalism

The Worcester Guardian will join news organizations across the country on Thursday, April 9, in marking the inaugural Local News Day, a nationwide initiative designed to celebrate and strengthen trusted local journalism.

Modeled after campaigns like Giving Tuesday, Local News Day aims to reconnect communities with the outlets that inform residents, hold institutions accountable and help sustain civic life. Organizers say the day will encourage readers to subscribe, donate, share stories and engage more deeply with local reporting.

For The Worcester Guardian — an independent, nonprofit digital newsroom launched in September 2023 — the mission behind Local News Day closely aligns with its own.

The Worcester Guardian covers a wide range of topics, including local government, public safety, business, sports and arts and entertainment. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, it provides free access to its journalism, supported by donations, sponsorships and philanthropic contributions.

The initiative comes at a time of significant contraction in the local news industry. Since 2000, more than 2,200 newspapers have closed nationwide, including more than 360 since 2020. In Worcester, the city’s daily newspaper has seen its newsroom staff reduced by roughly 75%.

Against that backdrop, The Worcester Guardian has positioned itself as a growing source of community-centered reporting, with a focus on filling gaps left by shrinking for-profit outlets.

“Our mission is rooted in serving the public with independent, fact-based journalism,” said Timothy M. Loew, chair of the Worcester Guardian’s board of directors. “Local News Day is a powerful reminder that strong communities depend on strong local news, and that support from readers and partners makes that possible.”

Local News Day is open to broad participation beyond newsrooms. Schools, libraries, businesses and community organizations are all encouraged to take part, alongside individuals who can support local journalism by reading, sharing and contributing to their local outlets.
