WORCESTER—Due to a forecasted high heat index Tuesday through Friday, the city is activating several cooling centers for residents.
City officials remind residents that prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity impact the body’s natural cooling systems and can lead to elevated body temperature and risk of illness. Residents are advised to limit strenuous physical activity, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors.
Below is a schedule of hours and locations. Each facility will have supplies of water on hand for distribution.
Tuesday, June 18:
- Worcester Senior Center, 128 Providence St., 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Worcester Public Library Main Branch, 3 Salem Sq., 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Wednesday, June 19:
- St. Xavier Center, 20 Temple St., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Thursday, June 20:
- Worcester Senior Center, 128 Providence St., 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Worcester Public Library Main Branch, 3 Salem Sq., 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- South High Community High School, 170 Apricot St., 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Friday June 21:
- Worcester Public Library Main Branch, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Worcester Senior Center, 128 Providence St., 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- South High Community High School, 170 Apricot St., 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All facilities are accessible via the Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA), which continues to provide fare-free service. The WRTA also provides curb-to-curb ADA transportation. For information on bus routes, ADA transportation and travel training, please call the WRTA at 508-791-9782.
