WORCESTER—Open Sky Community Services has received the 2024 Community Activism Award from the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) for its Safe Homes program, which supports LGBTQIA+ youth in Central Massachusetts. The honor was presented during the NOHS 2024 Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.
“Safe Homes has supported LGBTQIA+ youth in finding their voice and connecting with peers and mentors in a safe environment since its inception nearly thirty years ago. Our outstanding program leaders and community partners are fully deserving of this recognition from the National Organization for Human Services,” he added in an announcement.
Safe Homes, established to serve youth aged 14 to 23, provides a wide range of resources, including educational programming, leadership training, mental health counseling, emergency supports, and recreational activities. The program also maintains an active online community to reach individuals outside of its primary service areas in Worcester and North Worcester County.
The Community Activism Award recognizes individuals and organizations that demonstrate a commitment to social justice and equity. Employment Options Executive Director Shannon Leary, who nominated Open Sky for the award, praised the program as “a beacon of hope and support for LGBTQIA+ youth,” adding that Open Sky’s leadership and innovative approach inspire others to improve society through meaningful actions.
This national recognition underscores the impact of Safe Homes and Open Sky’s broader mission to create a more equitable society.
