WORCESTER—Quinsigamond Community College’s (QCC) Interactive Media Design (IMD) program recently welcomed educators from Rijn IJssel, a secondary vocational school in Arnhem, Netherlands, for an academic exchange focused on media education and workforce preparation.
During their visit, Rijn IJssel faculty engaged with QCC faculty, administrators, and students, discussing curriculum development and emerging industry trends. Topics included the shift from traditional graphic design to interactive formats like User Interface (UI)/User Experience (UX) design, animation, and video production.
“Any time we can exchange ideas with our colleagues in any part of the world, it’s a beautiful thing,” said QCC Vice President of Academic Affairs Kathy Rentsch in the announcement.
One key area of interest for Rijn IJssel faculty was QCC’s approach to online learning. Currently, Rijn IJssel offers only in-person courses, so representatives explored how QCC integrates online programming with student support services.
“It was inspiring to see how QCC is an integral part of the community, caring for the well-being of its students,” said Roy den Hartog, international coordinator and marketing professor at Rijn IJssel, in the announcement. “The fact that many teachers were once students here speaks volumes about their appreciation for the program.”
The exchange also included discussions on human-centered design and artificial intelligence in creative industries. Rijn IJssel faculty observed QCC classes and student critiques, further reinforcing common goals in media education.
“Even though Rijn IJssel is far away and a different culture, we found many similarities,” said QCC Professor of Interactive Media Mary Valentine. “Our students really embraced them.”
The collaboration continues next month when Valentine and Adjunct Instructor of Interactive Media Emily Carroll visit Rijn IJssel to further develop the partnership.
QCC’s IMD program has a history of student success, with graduates transferring to institutions such as Savannah College of Art & Design, Clark University, and Lesley University.
