WORCESTER—A sanitary sewer overflow Friday resulted in the discharge of untreated wastewater into the storm sewer system that drains into Lake Quinsigamond, the city announced.
According to an announcement from city officials, the incident occurred near 65 Lake Ave. at 11:07 a.m. on June 6. Approximately 470 gallons of untreated wastewater were discharged onto the street due to an underground pipe leak.
City crews responded immediately and stopped the leak at 12:41 p.m. The sewer system is now operating normally, officials said.
Some of the overflow entered the storm sewer system, ultimately reaching Lake Quinsigamond. The public is being advised of the potential for elevated E. Coli levels at and around the discharge area. The city will conduct daily testing until bacteria levels return to an acceptable range.
