Worcester Public Library awarded 500 Chromebooks in statewide digital access push

Library to host event highlighting one of the largest device grants in Massachusetts and expanded technology access for local organizations

WORCESTER—The Worcester Public Library has been awarded 500 Chromebooks as part of a statewide effort to expand access to technology, one of the largest such grants to a library in Massachusetts, officials announced.

The devices are being distributed through the Connected and Online Program, an initiative led by the Massachusetts Broadband Institute, a division of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. The program is designed to improve digital access by providing equipment to communities and organizations that serve residents with limited access to technology.

Library officials said the award will support broader efforts to address digital equity in Worcester, where access to reliable devices and internet connectivity remains uneven across neighborhoods.

The library will host a public event this week to mark the award and recognize eight Worcester-based organizations that will also receive devices through the initiative. Representatives from the Worcester Public Library, the Massachusetts Broadband Institute and the City of Worcester are expected to attend.

The announcement reflects a growing emphasis statewide on closing gaps in digital access, particularly for residents who rely on public institutions and community organizations for internet access, job searches, education and essential services.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the main branch of the Worcester Public Library at 3 Salem Square.
