WORCESTER—The Worcester City Council formally recognizes the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Regional Reentry Center on Tuesday after the program received a national award honoring its work with underserved residents.

Mayor Joseph Petty is scheduled to present a proclamation at the Tuesday, Nov. 18, council meeting acknowledging the center’s recent Community Activism Award from the National Organization for Human Services. The award, given at the NOHS national conference on Nov. 8, highlights individuals and programs that expand opportunities for marginalized populations and demonstrate measurable impact locally and beyond.

The Worcester County Regional Reentry Center was honored for what the organization describes as a holistic, person-centered model of reentry. According to the announcement, the center provides transitional and permanent housing assistance, mental health and substance use treatment, workforce development programs, peer recovery coaching and other wraparound supports intended to help people stabilize their lives and avoid returning to incarceration.

Sheriff Lew Evangelidis said in the announcement that the recognition is humbling, given the number of “outstanding initiatives and dedicated individuals” considered for the award. He said the honor reflects the reentry team’s work and aligns with the sheriff’s office mission “to provide the highest quality human services to the community, supporting individuals in their journey toward successful reentry and meaningful opportunities.”

The recognition takes place during the council’s 6:30 p.m. meeting at City Hall.
