Worcester St. tuition free for low-income Mass. commuter students

Massachusetts residents who are Pell eligible, plan to commute, and have an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less can attend Worcester State tuition-free, according to the university.

WORCESTER—Worcester State University just launched a new initiative, Worcester State ValuePlus, designed to provide Massachusetts students with accessible pathways to earning a bachelor’s degree.

The program, which unites various financial aid options and academic resources, aims to minimize or remove financial barriers, ensuring that every student can access higher education.

According to a recent announcement, ValuePlus offers free tuition and fees to qualifying students who meet specific criteria. Massachusetts residents who are Pell eligible, plan to commute, and have an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less can attend Worcester State University tuition-free, with costs covered through federal, state, and institutional aid.

“We know that a bachelor’s degree is a transformational credential that changes lives and enables individuals to achieve their dreams,” Worcester State President Barry Maloney said in a statement. “As Worcester’s only public baccalaureate and master’s degree-granting university, we take seriously our responsibility to make the aspiration of a four-year college degree real for our hardworking families and students. With ValuePlus, we are leveraging the generous investment of the Healey-Driscoll administration to ensure all students in our community have access to Worcester State’s outstanding undergraduate education.”

In addition to covering costs for those who meet the full criteria, the university provides significant financial aid and merit scholarships for other students. Currently, 78% of Worcester State students receive some form of financial aid, with an average award of $10,111 annually.

Beyond traditional financial assistance, the Worcester State Foundation offers further support. The Foundation provides more than 400 scholarships totaling $1.8 million annually. These scholarships are available across a range of majors, allowing students to find funding that aligns with their academic pursuits and interests.

Worcester State ValuePlus isn’t just about reducing tuition costs, explain the school’s officials. The program takes a holistic approach by offering various cost-saving resources within the classroom itself. Many courses utilize free or low-cost textbooks, a practice that saved students nearly $2 million on course materials in the last academic year alone. Most of Worcester State’s more than 90 academic programs offer these no-cost and low-cost resources.

For students facing unexpected financial challenges, Worcester State’s student emergency fund is available to help cover unforeseen expenses that could otherwise jeopardize their studies.

“Together with Worcester State’s MajorPlus academic framework,” said Ryan Forsythe, vice president of enrollment management, in a press releease, “which allows students to complete two programs in just four years at no extra cost, Worcester State ValuePlus opens doors for our students. We work with students in a holistic way with attention to their financial needs, academic interests, and future goals to ensure they will succeed and graduate.”

To further aid students and families in understanding financial aid, Worcester State hosts a free, virtual information session on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute session provides an overview of available aid options, application processes, and how students can qualify for the ValuePlus program. A bilingual Spanish-speaking financial aid counselor will be available to answer questions.
